In a press release, Security Council members emphasized UNRWA’s vital role in providing life-saving humanitarian assistance to Palestinian refugees through basic education, health, relief and social service programs and emergency assistance in the occupied Palestinian territories, Jordan and Lebanon. and Syria.
They strongly warned against any attempt to eliminate or reduce UNRWA’s operations and mandate; They were aware that any interruption or suspension of UNRWA’s work would have serious humanitarian consequences for millions of Palestinian refugees and would also have consequences for the region.
Council members expressed deep concern about the laws passed by the Israeli parliament, calling on the Israeli government to comply with its international obligations, respect the privileges and immunities of UNRWA, and fulfill its responsibility to permit and facilitate fully, quickly, safely. and unimpeded humanitarian assistance to the entire Gaza Strip.
They requested that all parties enable UNRWA to fulfill its mandate in all areas of operation with full respect for the humanitarian principles of humanity, impartiality, impartiality and independence, and to respect UN and international humanitarian law, including the protection of humanitarian facilities.
The Israeli parliament passed two laws on Monday banning UNRWA from operating in the country and banning Israeli officials from any contact with the organization.
