Eyewitness: ‘The disaster is huge, I have never seen anything like this in my life’

It is said that a flood occurred without any warning in the town of Algemesi, about 40 km south of Valencia.

Water flows down the street, bringing with it thick, smelly mud that covers every visible surface.

As we pass through the slippery mud layer, we meet Bernardo, who is trying to sweep the mud from his house.

No matter how much he scrubs and cleans, the floors remain covered in dirt.

“The disaster is so big, I’ve never seen anything like it in my life,” he says.

He estimates some homes were filled with nearly two meters of water.

Some people in the flood zone said the force of the water was “like a tsunami” and caused cars on the street to fall on top of each other.

Since the flood also affected electricity, many people were left without electricity.

Citizens tried to repair the damage throughout the day. However, glimpses can still be seen as you pass through the town.

Two dining room chairs stand in front of a house.

Her once elegant velvet pillows are now soggy and faded.

Further ahead, giant pumps spray water from people’s basements.

On another street, cars gather in a chaotic group, stranded where the water left them.

Bernardo shows us a video of the immediate aftermath.

Cars stand on their bonnets while locals are stunned.

He estimates about half of the town’s vehicles were damaged.

And this misery is not unique to Algemesi; It’s a pain repeated in communities across southeastern Spain.
