SIU completes investigation into death of teenager who jumped into Grand River

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) found no reasonable grounds to believe that the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) officer committed a criminal offense in connection with the death of a 17-year-old boy.

Young died on July 2 jumped into the Grand River From the Imtiyaz Street bridge.

The SIU said officers tried to stop him from jumping on and around the bridge.

Warden Joseph Martino concluded that the officers involved were lawfully recruited and assigned.

“While it is extremely regrettable that the teenager could not be saved, his death was not due to the willingness of the officers and firefighters involved to try,” an SIU news release reads in part.

The SIU investigates officers’ conduct that could result in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
