Henderson Police Department expands license plate reader system

The Henderson Police Department announced it will expand its license plate reader system citywide.

Henderson Police announced they have received grant funding to add more pole cameras to their Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) System. These cameras will be placed at strategic locations around Henderson.

The city purchased 54 cameras that were added to in-car systems through grant funding. These cameras are portable and relocatable.

ALPR automatically captures passing vehicles and their license plate information. The software can check this number against a list of license plates marked as “vehicles of interest,” such as stolen cars or missing persons.

Police said the system only focused on license plate data and did not conduct any surveillance.

The data captured also remains anonymous, and officers can only identify the registered owner of a vehicle by searching a separate state government database.

Henderson Police have used ALPR technology in a limited capacity since 2011.
