NC man sentenced to 35 years in prison for shooting and killing ex-friend in Myrtle Beach area apartment

CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF) – A North Carolina man has been found guilty of a deadly shooting at a Myrtle Beach area apartment.

Mitchell Skyes II, 22, of Wingate, pleaded guilty to murder Wednesday, the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office said. Skyes’ case was connected to a May 2023 shooting on Hartland Drive.

Prosecutors said Skyes shot and killed 23-year-old Jordan Drake and that both men knew each other from the same town in North Carolina.

Authorities said both men were friends growing up before they had a falling out sometime before the shooting. Both men were visiting Myrtle Beach and decided to meet to put their differences aside.

That’s when prosecutors said Skyes pulled out a firearm and shot Drake in front of multiple witnesses. Skyes was arrested shortly after the attack.

A judge sentenced Skyes to 35 years in prison after he pleaded guilty. The attorney’s office noted that murder was an “everyday crime,” meaning Skyes must serve every day of his 35-year sentence before being released.
