A member of a Haverhill school committee is facing charges of assault and battery on a juvenile, according to documents filed in Haverhill District Court.

Cheryl Ferguson was arraigned on charges of indecent assault and battery 14 and older after she was arrested for allegedly groping a costumed teenager outside a 7-Eleven on Tuesday night.

According to a filed police report, the mother of a teenage boy told police that her son was standing outside a convenience store on Dudley Street wearing a Halloween mask around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday evening when Ferguson allegedly walked up to him and groped his buttocks.

Ferguson allegedly walked into the 7-Eleven and then came out once again, touched the teen’s breast and said, “Oh, you have nipples.” The teenager allegedly told Ferguson to get away, and Ferguson responded by calling him a “creep.”

Police said the teenager then went home and told his mother about the incident.

When police responded to his home, Ferguson told officers he was at the 7-Eleven to play Keno and as he was leaving, he poked the teenager in the chest and commented, “You’re scary.” Ferguson was later arrested.

Ferguson was released on personal recognizance Wednesday after appearing in court Tuesday and was ordered to stay away from the teen or anyone under 16. Ferguson was ordered to wear a GPS tracking device and work under a curfew from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.

Furgueson will have restricted access to school grounds.

“We were notified today by the Haverhill Police Department that charges had been filed against a school committee member,” Mayor Melinda E. Barrett and Superintendent Margaret Marotta said in a joint statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to restrict the member’s access to school facilities and are taking other precautionary measures until further notice. “
