EU to investigate China’s Temu over suspected illegal products and ‘addictive’ platform

European Union It launched an investigation into Chinese online marketplace Temu, on suspicion that it did not interfere with the sale of illegal products and that the platform’s design was “addictive” for users.
The investigation is under the supervision of the European Commission Digital Services ActA powerful tool that provides broad powers over online businesses operating in the 27-member bloc.
If found guilty Temu It could face fines of up to 6 percent of its annual global revenue.

The Commission has asked Temu multiple times in recent months to provide more information about its efforts to stop the sale of illegal items on the platform. Information was also requested on “risks to consumer protection, public health and users’ well-being”.

The commission decided to launch an in-depth investigation based on Temu’s responses.

The investigation will assess Temu’s efforts to “restrict the sale of incompatible products” in the EU; this includes efforts to limit “the reemergence of previously suspended rogue traders” who have sold illegal products in the past.
