Founder of Tip Top Curry Puff dies of heart attack aged 80 – Mothership.TR

Tip Top Curry Puff, founder of local curry puff business, died on October 28, 2024.

Accordingly Shin Min Daily NewsLooi San Cheng passed away at home due to a heart attack at the age of 80.

Looi’s daughter Liang told Chinese media that her father suffered from “three high” medical conditions: high blood sugar, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

He had also been taking medication for a long time due to high blood pressure.

He added that his father never complained about pain, so the family was shocked by his passing.

“He didn’t like to disturb others, so even if he was sick, he didn’t tell us. His death was very sudden for us,” he said.

Heritage

Tip Top Curry Puff began serving handmade curry puffs in 1979 at Block 722 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8.

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong praised the business during his duty 2006 National Day Rally Speech as an example of Singaporean companies succeeding overseas.

Before starting the curry puff business, Liang said his father started out as an electrician and contractor.

Liang added that his grandfather may have influenced his father because they were from Hainan and his grandfather ran a coffeehouse: “My father loves to eat and is also good at cooking Western dishes.”

Accordingly Shin MinTip Top Curry Puff sold more than 5,000 curry puffs a day and its net profit exceeded S$1 million in six years.

The brand became a joint venture in 2011, according to his daughter.

The outlets are located at Changi Airport Terminal 1, One Raffles Place, Bugis Junction, Compass One, Tampines Century Square and E!Hub@Downtown East.
