Weekend Wine: Santalba Viura 2023

As temperatures begin to cool, it may seem like it’s time for red wines. But I’m still holding on to the last vestiges of summer with fresh, fun white wines; like this beautiful Viura from Bodegas Santalba in Rioja, Spain.

This wine is made from Viura grapes, the white variety of Rioja, sourced from sustainably grown dry-farmed vineyards. It has a light yellow hue, pleasant acidity and a non-overpowering sweetness, with citrus and floral aromas. We’ve found it pairs wonderfully with creamy, rich foods, so try it with risotto, pasta in a cream sauce, or a variety of cheeses. It is also kosher.

Price: 54.90 New Zealand dollars

Weekend Whiskey: Loch Lomond STEAM AND FIRE

This single malt whiskey is distilled in both traditional and modern stills to achieve greater complexity. It is aged in three types of American oak barrels: new bourbon barrels, used barrels, and charred barrels for 10 months.

Although its name suggests smoky undertones, it is actually a slightly rough, caramel-spiced whiskey with plenty of dried fruit and sweet citrus aromas. Smoke seekers won’t find it here, but those craving a slight smoky complexity will enjoy this drink. It pairs well with rich or aged cheeses and dark chocolate.

Price: 150 NIS

Weekend Trip: Alexanderfest Beer Festival

The annual Alexander Brewery Beer Festival is back, and this time it’s dedicated to unity and supporting IDF soldiers. As always, the festival will offer great beers, a lively atmosphere, live performances, a DJ, tattoo stations and, for the first time, a VIP area with free food and drinks.
