Suddenly the House Became Dark

Suddenly the House Became Dark

And even though we turned all the switches we tested
The breakers in the basement called and
called, nothing. When are the big kids?
Turn off your electricity, it’s gone. Our house is dark
Then it’s like the inside of a closed refrigerator.
Our red walls turn purple until they appear
Screaming like a ringing phone.

Now we’re wandering around the house
In the freezing black, feeling our way out of the room
We went up to the room, amazed at how little we knew.
No keyboard works except the piano.
But music? -it’s over and done.

I’m looking for paper and pen thinking I’ll do it
Scribble this poem the old-fashioned way, trying to remember it.
How. All around me are rooms from my past
houses are changing places with each other. i met
My old self walking down the hall. our garden
It blinked and is now gone from all our windows.
What if the whole city goes dark? Let’s assume
Does darkness extinguish the sun? What if God pulls
A big plug for goodness? What will we believe?
In which dark house will we live?
