Maryland Inmate’s Death Triggers Investigation

WESTOVER, MD. — Maryland State Police are continuing their investigation into the death of an inmate at Eastern Correctional Institution in Somerset County. The deceased, whose name was identified as 38-year-old Virgil Bernard Robinson, was found unresponsive in his cell on September 21 and was declared dead at the scene.

According to authorities, Robinson was discovered by prison staff around 5:10 p.m. while serving his sentence at the state prison in Westover, Maryland. Following the discovery, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was called by the Department of Public Safety and Corrections. The Services’ Internal Investigation Unit (DPSCS IIU) will lead the investigation.

A fellow inmate was identified as a suspect but no charges were filed as the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have stated that possible charges will depend on autopsy findings and overall investigation results.

State Police crime scene technicians are working with DPSCS investigators to collect evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding Robinson’s death. Once the investigation is completed, the case will be submitted to the Somerset County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.

No further details were released as authorities await autopsy results to clarify the cause of death.
