Former Indian para athlete and activist Suvarna Raj wins UN SDG action award

In a landmark achievement for India, Suvarna Raj, a renowned para-athlete and passionate disability rights activist, won the 2024 United Nations SDG Action Award at the prestigious ceremony held at TH Roma Carpegna Palace in Rome. Selected from a competitive pool of 5,500 applicants representing 190 countries, Suvarna was honored as a Changemaker Finalist for her continuous work in promoting accessibility, empowerment and social inclusion of persons with disabilities (PwDs) in India.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Action Awards recognize individuals and organizations around the world who are leading transformative actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year, distinguished individuals, UN leaders, government officials and global change makers attended the awards. Suvarna’s recognition as the first disabled woman from India to receive this award is a historic moment that underlines the country’s progress towards inclusion and empowerment.

The awards ceremony was broadcast live and celebrated Suvarna Raj’s work as a catalyst for change. Suvarna’s achievements as a Changemaker Finalist not only highlighted the barriers faced by PwDs in India, but also demonstrated the power of resilience, advocacy and innovation in transforming lives and communities. Suvarna’s contributions are closely aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), making her a symbol of hope and progress for millions of people with disabilities around the world.

Who is Suvarna Raj?

Suvarna Raj is an international para-athlete, disability rights activist and social worker who works tirelessly for the empowerment and inclusion of people with disabilities in India. As a wheelchair user, Suvarna has encountered numerous obstacles in her own life that have strengthened her mission to create a more accessible society. It has improved facilities and accessibility in transportation, healthcare and infrastructure by conducting more than 500 accessibility audits in public and private sectors under the Accessible India Campaign.

In addition to her work on accessibility, Suvarna has also been instrumental in influencing national policies and promoting inclusive practices. He is the Brand Ambassador for Accessible Elections 2024 appointed by the Election Commission of India and has been actively campaigning for the rights of PwDs.
