There is no life sentence under Brazilian law, and each defendant is expected to serve a maximum of 30 years in prison.

The two were ordered to pay $706,000 together. Compensation was awarded (£93,000; $120,000) in damages to Franco’s mother, partner, daughter and Gomes’ wife.

They were also ordered to pay a pension to Gomes’ son Arthur until he turns 24.

Chaves, who survived the shooting, told the court how the night unfolded and how it “completely changed” his life.

Chaves and his family fled the country shortly after the attack, and he was unable to attend Franco’s funeral or memorial service. He has since returned to Brazil.

Speaking to the court via video link, he said those responsible for Franco’s murder would spend the rest of their lives hearing Franco’s name and seeing his “face on walls around the world”.

“They took Marielle from us, but they didn’t take away what Marielle meant,” he added.

In court, family and friends applauded and chanted “Marielle is here! Anderson is here!” They chanted slogans. It’s a phrase that became popular during nationwide protests following their deaths in 2018, after the verdict was announced.

Racial equality minister Anielle Franco said her sister’s legacy would be “proof that women, that is, black people in the slums, deserve to survive when they get into positions of power.”

“With blood flowing through our veins, we will continue to defend the legacy and memory of Marielle and Anderson for as long as we are alive,” he added.

“I didn’t want it to be a flag, a slogan. She is missed, and we really miss Mari’s joy, strength, courage and genius,” said federal congressman Pastor Henrique Vieira.

Investigations are continuing against the Barbosa and Brazão brothers, who allegedly took part in the order and planning of the attack.

They deny any involvement in the murder or the militia.
