IND vs NZ: Shubman Gill misses 100, passes 800 Test runs in 2024

Shubman Gill would agonizingly miss out on a well-deserved hundred as the Indian batsman was dismissed for 90 on Saturday, November 2. However, Gill would surpass the 800-run mark for the calendar year in Tests by hitting the Wankhede stadium.

Gill came on to bat in the 7th over After Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Matt Henry. She started cautiously but soon found her rhythm and formed a 50-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, India’s steady position of 78 for 1 was barely followed by their precarious position of 84 for 4 in just nine balls at the end of Day 1. Gill then calmly reached his half-century, his 7th in Tests and his first significant score since the Chennai Test against Bangladesh. With Pant dismissed for 60, Gill would ensure India reached lunch unscathed at 195 for 5.

The star batsman restarted somewhat hesitantly after the break and edged a dangerous Ajaz Patel. Gill would also shake off his runout scare in the next over when Ajaz went for a quick single. The starlet started losing his partners at the other end as Ravindra Jadeja and Sarfaraz Khan rushed off after the lunch break.

Gill would shift gears a bit at this point and get into the 80s, hitting a 2 boundary off Phillips. But he remained resolute in defence, when needed as the ball misbehaved at the Wankhede track.

While he remained patient and tried to play Ajaz, the left-arm spinner would have the last laugh and remove the star batsman as Daryl Mitchell caught the slips well. Gill scored 90 off 146 balls with 7 boundaries and a six to his name.

Gill currently has 805 runs in 10 Tests this year at an average of 53.66.
