Jamie Kah handed Derby Day suspension at Flemington

Star jockey Jamie Kah completed an eventful Derby Day after a 10-match suspension.

Kah achieved Group 1 success in the $2 million G1 Victoria Derby, ridden by SA trainer Andrew Gluyas on Goldrush Guru.

But he had previously been sanctioned for careless driving charges in the second race while riding Kuroyanagi, another SA-trained galloper.

The referees found that tackles near the 1100 meter limit fell within the ‘medium range’ and imposed a suspension from Wednesday 6 November until Thursday 14 November.

This will rule him out for the final two days of the Flemington carnival.

However, he will be able to race alongside Okita Soushi in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup, replacing trainer Ciaron Maher.

The stewards’ report said: “Rider Jamie Kah (Kuroyanagi) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving under the provisions of AR 131(a) by allowing his mount to skid near 1100m when he failed to clear far enough from I Am. Velvet, balanced and controlled immediately after Kuroyanagi, Jamie Kah will be able to return to driving on Friday, November 15, 2024. While the penalty is being evaluated, his confession of guilt, his record and the nature of the incident will be suspended. level was taken into consideration.”

Overall, Kah’s day was pretty good.

In the fourth competition, he experienced the most touching moment of the day, and perhaps the year, when he scored on the horse Another Wil, owned by the late Colonel McKenna.

He was injured behind the fences before the fifth race when his mount Hurry Curry headbutted him, knocking them both out of the Wakeful Stakes.

He then suffered disappointment when his mount, Traffic Warden, missed qualifying in the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and his Godolphin gallop came close with EIPH.

After this, he went on to win the G1 Derby aboard Goldrush Guru and narrowly missed out on the Group 1 double when ridden Amelia’s Jewel.

What a day.
