Netflix’s new documentary Martha (out now) looks at the 2004 trial that some have called a “whore hunt.”

“Everything he would do was going to be perfect,” his friend Kathy Tatlock says in the film. “And I think in a way it ruined his life.”

Stewart had a thing difficult marriage with her now ex-husband publisher Andy Stewart. They divorced in 1990 after 29 years of marriage. But “after Andy left, I lost myself at work,” Martha says in the document. He built a lifestyle empire worth $1.2 billion in 1999. “He was like a superstar,” says attorney Allen Grubman.

Everything started to collapse in 2001. Martha remembers getting a call from a friend about a biotech stock during a fuel stop on a flight to Cabo, Mexico. He sold the stocks and was later convicted in 2004 of lying to the FBI during an insider trading investigation.

“Guilty, guilty, guilty, whatever,” he says Martha. “My daughter fainted when she read the verdict. Poor kid.”

“It was so scary and incomprehensible,” he adds. Alexis. “Then I woke up and unfortunately I was still there.”

“These prosecutors should have been put in a Cuisinart and elevated,” Martha quips. “I was a prize for those fools.”

Shares of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia fell and Martha resigned from the board. He reported to Alderson Federal Prison Camp for a five-month sentence. He estimates he lost more than $1 billion due to the scandal.

Martha, of course, staged the ultimate comeback. Eleven years after his prison sentence, Justin Bieber helped launch his reinvention. At Bieber’s Comedy Central roast in 2015, he shocked the audience by directing harsh jabs at his fellow roasters and himself.

“This catapulted her to a younger audience,” says her friend Charlotte Beers.

HE I sat next to Snoop Doggand realized that next they would do light commercials for Bic and film a cooking show.

“Before this, he had lived worrying about what people thought of him, and then the worst thing that could happen happened. And he survived,” he says. Martha Stewart Living founding editor Isolde Motley. “He was released after going to prison.”
