The case began with a complaint filed by Saina Parveen, who lives in West Delhi, accusing a local trader of sexually harassing her after calling her with the promise of “offering her a job” and making her drink a drug-laced drink. An FIR was registered against the man on October 10 for rape, drunkenness and criminal intimidation, leading to his immediate arrest.
About two weeks later, his family approached senior police officials, claiming that they were blackmailed into paying Rs 15 lakh in exchange for dropping the case. DCP City Suraj Rai ordered an in-depth investigation, which unearthed a wider extortion network led by Parveen and involving three other women.
Police soon discovered that Parveen, who used a fake Aadhaar card, was not the only person involved in the incident. His accomplices were identified as Jyoti from west Delhi along with Tanu and Manisha, both residents of Agra. So far, Parveen and Jyoti have been arrested, while Tanu and Manisha are still at large.
Investigation revealed that Parveen approached the trader from Agra on the pretext of looking for a job. Police sources said the two had a consensual physical relationship but later the woman started blackmailing him for money. When she refused, he filed a false rape complaint against her.
Police said the women’s modus operandi involved approaching men under various pretexts, establishing rapport and then using legal threats to extort money. Rai added that they were examining other complaints in Agra to see if they were linked to the same gang.
