Manipur Police Officer Shots Sub-Inspector to Death After Verbal Argument, Arrested

A Manipur Police constable in Jiribam district fatally shot his senior colleague, a senior constable of Sub-Inspector rank, following a verbal argument over an issue on Saturday, officials said.

Police have not yet found the reason for the argument behind the murder.

The accused police officer was immediately arrested by other police officers.

A police official in Imphal said the incident took place at Mongbung village police station, which is currently under high security due to ongoing violence in the area.

Citing preliminary reports from the area, the official said that police constable Bikramjit Singh allegedly opened fire from close range with his service rifle on Sub-Inspector Shah Jahan, who died on the spot. The two were said to have had a fight in the early hours of Saturday.

The deceased Sub-Inspector was a resident of Yaripok Tulihal in Thoubal district and was stationed at Mongbung village police station under Jiribam police station. The accused police officer was from Naharup Pangong Makhong in Imphal East district.

Following the incident, senior officials from Jiribam police station came to the scene and conducted a thorough investigation. The accused police officer will be interrogated to determine the facts surrounding the shooting and take appropriate action.

A large number of Manipur Police personnel have been deployed in Mongbung village to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of residents amid rising tensions in the area, police officials said. The mixed-population Jiribam district, adjacent to southern Assam, has witnessed several incidents of violence this year. Even after ethnic violence broke out in many parts of the northeastern state since May last year, the overall situation in the region remained relatively peaceful.
