Meanwhile, reigning Men’s Cricket World Cup champions Australia have also named a new opening pair of Matt Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk in their playing XI for the first ODI.

The pair are in direct competition for the role of Travis Head’s opening partner in next year’s Champions Cup. Skipper Pat Cummins gave them the license to bat like in the T20s.

“Both in T20 and one-dayers it was quite scary to bowl, so that’s our message to them,” he said before the ODI. “My preference is definitely that they give a good crack.”
