SHREWSBURY TOWN have sacked manager Paul Hurst as the club remains second in League One.

Hurst returned to manage The Shrews for a second time in January 2024, but sees himself on the exit door just 10 months later.

Hurst, 50, was instrumental in keeping the club in the First League last season.

But the EFL boss has been given his marching orders after a dismal run of two wins in 19 games this season.

The draconian decision was taken following an emergency board meeting this morning.

The final nail in the coffin came after Shrewsbury were eliminated from the first round of the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat to League Two side Salford on Saturday.

The club last failed to advance past the first round in 2013.

The club’s statement said: “We are sad to confirm that Shrewsbury Town have parted company with head coach Paul Hurst and assistant boss Chris Doig.

“We would also like to thank them for the outstanding work they have done in their first term which has enabled us to reach the play-off final and the final of the EFL Trophy.

“It was this success that led the President to take responsibility for rehiring Paul and Chris earlier this year.

“And everyone at the football club is hugely disappointed that their second spell didn’t work out and we find ourselves in our current position. The search for a new manager is currently ongoing.”

Despite saving them last season, Hurst won just six of 37 games in his second season at New Meadow.

He previously managed the club for 19 months from 2016 to 2018.

The former full-back led The Town to the play-off final in 2018, where they eventually lost out to Rotherham.

The Englishman left Shrewsbury after just three days, replacing Mick McCarthy as boss. Ipswich Town.

However, Hurst was fired from The Tractor Boys after five months in charge before stints at Scunthorpe and Grimsby.

Moreover, Salop continues to be one of the favorites to fall this season after finishing 19th last season.

Club chiefs are searching for a new manager for the second time this year after Matt Taylor was sacked in January.

Hurst rejoined Shrewsbury when the club was 20th in the table.
