Bystander who intervened in fight on Corydon Avenue shot, 2 men charged: Winnipeg police

Two men have been arrested after police say they shot a bystander who was trying to break up a fight between the men and a third person in Winnipeg last month.

Western District General Patrol officers and the Tactical Support Team responded to a report of two men shooting at people on Corydon Street between Hugo and Arbuthnot streets at 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 5, police said in a statement Sunday.

The statement said both men, aged 18 and 19, fled the area, one on foot and the other in a vehicle, before police officers arrived.

A short time later, police were notified that a 44-year-old man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the upper body. Through investigation, police believe the two men and a third man were fighting when a bystander intervened to help the third man and was shot.

Police said a vehicle was also hit during the fight.

The Major Crime Unit identified two men accused of shooting the bystander and searched homes in Code Street and Monarch Mews on Friday.

Police found approximately 18 grams of cocaine, a counterfeit bill, a fake identification document and approximately $5,000.

The defendants were arrested and both were charged with aggravated assault, possession of a prohibited firearm with intent, possession of a prohibited firearm and carrying a concealed weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, among other charges, according to the release.

Investigators also found that one of the defendants was on Broadway and St. Louis in March. It also linked him to a separate investigation involving a report of a gunshot heard on Smith Street between St. Mary Avenue. Police said no injuries were reported during this incident.

18 and 19 year olds were detained.
