Two officers of the Delhi Traffic Police were hit by a car and dragged on its bonnet for 20 meters while they were trying to stop the vehicle for jumping traffic signals in Kishangarh, south-west Delhi, on Saturday evening. Police said the culprit’s car has been identified but the suspect has not yet been arrested.

The two officers were identified as deputy sub-inspector Pramod Singh and head constable Sailesh Chouhan. Deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Surendra Choudhary said the injured sustained minor injuries and were discharged from Safdarjung Hospital after treatment.

According to police, the control room was informed about the incident on Ber Sarai Road in Kishangarh around 8 pm. The caller informed them that a car had hit traffic officers and that he wanted a PCR vehicle but not an ambulance. When the police arrived at the scene, the police officers were taken to the hospital and after a follow-up, they found them unconscious in the hospital.

After his recovery, his statements were recorded.

DCP Choudhary said that two constables posted at Vasant Vihar traffic junction made a mobile prosecution call to Vedant Deshika Marg around 7.45 pm, when a white car crossed the red light and drove towards them. “Chouhan signaled the car to stop and the driver of the car initially stopped the car. “When Chouhan asked the driver to get out of the car, the driver tried to flee the scene, dragged them on the hood for about 20 meters, then hit them and fled the scene,” he said.

Police said a mobile crime and forensics team was investigating the scene. CCTV footage was also obtained and analyzed.

“The officers alleged that the driver of the vehicle was obstructing their official duties and also attempted to kill the said police officers by forcing them into his car. Based on the facts, circumstances and statements given by the injured police officers, it was stated that prima facie the crime of attempted murder and obstructing the performance of official duty was committed.

A case under section 109(1)/221/132/121(1)/3(5) of the BNS was registered on Saturday.

“The search for the offending vehicle and the accused is on. The offending vehicle is registered in the name of Jai Bhagwan, a resident of Nangal Devat in Vasant Kunj. However, it is yet to be ascertained whether he was driving the vehicle or not,” he said.
