The court also predicted that the trial would begin on November 11.

The gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor sparked unrest across the country. Protests were held across the country, including by medical professionals demanding better safety conditions in the workplace.

It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court took suo moto consideration of the issue and emphasized the need to improve safety for medical professionals, as well as improve conditions in the workplace.

The investigation of the case was transferred from the state police to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court. While the CBI identified Roy as the sole accused in the case, it also arrested former Director Sandip Ghosh for allegedly being an accessory to the crime.
