A man has been found guilty of the 2023 murder of Cynthia Amalfitano, a 63-year-old preschool teacher whose disappearance sparked national attention before her body was found in the bushes at Carousel Park last September.

After deliberating for several hours Friday, the jury found Stephen Heck guilty of first-degree murder for Amalfitano’s death. Heck faces a mandatory life sentence if convicted in the coming months.

Prosecutors spent about four days presenting trial evidence against Heck, whom they identified as Amalfitano’s boyfriend. They said he strangled her after a trip to Rehoboth and dumped her body in Carousel Park.

They showed the jury pictures of minor injuries on Heck’s body, indicating he had been involved in a physical struggle. They presented the jury with video evidence showing the two driving to Rehoboth and Heck returning to Amalfitano’s apartment alone.

They backed this up with cellphone data that showed the two were in the Carousel Park area after returning from Rehoboth before Amalfitano was reported missing after failing to show up for a teaching assignment. Concord Preschool and Child Care.
