Huge scandal erupts after more than 300 explicit videos of Equatorial Guinea’s financial crimes chief were leaked

Baltasar Ebang Engonga, Director General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), has found himself embroiled in a scandal worthy of a spy movie, or at least a reality show.

Originally under investigation for fraud, authorities allegedly came across a stash of more than 300 tapes showing Engonga having romantic escapades with a cast that included his brother’s wife, his cousin and even the President’s sister. Now, not only his financial situation but also his choice of “office activities” are being scrutinized.

What started as a routine corruption investigation took an unexpected turn when investigators found the videos on Engonga’s computer. The reportedly consensual recordings were filmed in various settings, including his office, hotels and toilets, and have since been leaked online. The tapes created quite an uproar and made Engonga’s public service career seem a little too “public” for comfort.

The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, led by Anatolio Nzang Nguema, was not happy about this situation and launched an investigation into how the tapes were leaked and whether they posed a health risk to Engonga. โ€œIf proven, he could be charged with endangering public health,โ€ a spokesman said, hinting Engonga could be dealing with more than just media scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea Vice President Teodoro Nguema addressed the scandal in a public post on X (formerly Twitter), reminding officials that โ€œministries are only for administrative work.โ€ He announced stricter controls to prevent future incidents and warned that anyone who violated these rules could face disciplinary action, including dismissal.

Engonga, who is married with six children, took on a key role at ANIF, where he led financial investigations and anti-corruption efforts. Now that his personal life has spilled over onto social media, Engonga’s unexpected “plot” may become the most talked about “investigation” of his career.
