A bold step for women’s empowerment

A bold step for women’s empowerment

As we approach Tuesday, November 5, 2024, we are ready to take one of our boldest steps in history and women’s empowerment. Vice President Kamala Harris Her potential rise to the presidency reflects a conscious effort by the Democratic Party to “bet on women.” the party’s most loyal voter bloc. Harris’ rise to secure the Democratic Party’s nomination symbolizes a collective response as a party willing to shift traditional archetypes and redefine leadership.

Trusting women: Organizing for change

Women voters are the engines behind grassroots campaigns. Women organize, research, support, donate and push candidates across the finish line. While the party has historically relied on women, today the renewed expectation is for the party to go one step further and trust women. Britney Whaley of the Working Families Party is promoting this paradigm shift through her organization’s initiative: Bet on UsShe trains Black women to step into political power by creating community-centered campaigns and running for office.

Harris’ candidacy is galvanizing a broad spectrum of Black women who, inspired by her candidacy, want to support the campaign and encourage voter turnout. Attorney Fallon McClureDeputy Director of Policy and Advocacy ACLU of Georgiaexecutive led Andrea Youngcreated a five-step, non-partisan get-out-the-vote (GOTV) campaign,”I have 5.” The campaign encourages voters to vote early and create a community and voting plan by Election Day. “I Got 5 On It” also offers volunteer opportunities through texts, tele-town halls and a virtual Election Day eve rally.

Cassandra Littlejohn is a member of the North Fulton Democrats and a volunteer. Harris-Walz campaigndazzles and donates “Vote” t-shirts. “As women, we inspire each other,” says Littlejohn, a 2020 Harris supporter who hung a life-size cardboard statue of Harris at the bottom of the stairwell. (Because Harris) is a Black woman who has reached the top of the ladder, I’m proud of her. Littlejohn says the fact that the presidential candidate was a woman “ignited” his determination to make sure she (Harris) got elected.

Dr. Tincie Lynch, military veteran and founder Women Veterans of Georgia for Kamala Harris (GWV4KH) organized his colleagues and veterans to form a grassroots organization. GWV4KH women held a campaign fundraiser, attended rallies across Georgia, sent postcards, and waved signs for the Harris-Walz campaign.

These women represent a portion of the women who consistently engage in voter turnout, campaign organizing, and political action. But Harris’ candidacy serves as extra fuel for female voters who desire representation and empowerment.

Betting on women: Representation in legislation

There is a shift in the discourse around the party’s reliance on female voters. Harris’ candidacy signals a bold breakthrough in women’s empowerment in an election year rife with issues that stand in the way of equality. Black women, women of color, and White women are disturbed by attacks on their reproductive freedoms. Every registered voter shares the fundamental fact of being born of a woman and underlines that bodily autonomy is a collective concern. Harris successfully engages male voters in reproductive rights conversation comments of couples are negatively affected in states with anti-abortion legislation. His brilliance in providing the framework of workable plans to address urgent problems created permitting structures that promoted many important issues. Republicans will cross party lines to support it.

Societal expectations for diversity, equity, and inclusion encourage women to have a seat at the boardroom table. reversal Roe v. wade and legislators using this momentum to ban abortion in states shows that women are seated but their voices are silenced. Current overburdens, such as child care costs, low wages, unaffordable healthcare, high grocery prices, and rising homeownership costs, are barriers that greatly impact women who serve as heads of households and primary caregivers. Now more than ever, women are demanding that more parties bet on them.

Paradigm shift: A bold step for women’s empowerment

Although Harris was not the first woman to win the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, she was the first black woman to reach the top. Harris’ candidacy and potential presidency is a symbolic embrace of a new governing paradigm that reflects the values we choose to support and the fabric of our nation’s democracy.

Redefining social outcomes: Empowering our girls

As we redefine leadership in the United States, we stand ready to change the political and social outcomes where yesterday’s glass ceilings are finally shattered. Fifteen-year-old Amani “DJ LittyyA student who DJed at Harris-Walz political rallies was born during the Obama administration. Now, she witnesses a Black South Asian graduate of an HBCU and member of a historically Black sorority. Alpha Kappa Alpha with the chance to rise to the highest office in the land. In a recent interview, DJ Littyy shares that Harris’ candidacy is a sign to him that “she could be the next nominee.” Littyy will share the same perspective as our admiration Blue Ivy Carterrapper: “I’ve never seen a ceiling in my life.”

For women, the moment represents the fruit of the seeds we have planted, watered and labored for decades. Our families, our communities and our nation can always count on us.
