St. St. Paul man stabs man to death with fillet knife after argument: Charges

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (FOX 9)A St. Paul man indicted Fatal stabbing after argument at an apartment complex over money.

What do we know?

Police responded to a stabbing at the Redeemer Arms apartment building on Dale Street North near the I-94 overpass around 6:15 p.m. Sunday.

Friends of the 70-year-old victim, Lester Haynes, said they were watching football at his apartment when the suspect, 64-year-old Robert Ramsey, knocked on the door.

Witnesses said the two men got into an argument over money that turned physical. In the images captured on security cameras, men are seen fighting each other as the fight spills into the corridor.

Ultimately, police said, Ramsey stabbed the victim with a fillet knife.

After the stabbing

When first responders arrived, they said Haynes was unresponsive and had no pulse. The man was taken to hospital and pronounced dead shortly before 7 p.m.

Police said Ramsey returned to his home and changed clothes after the stabbing. He then returned to the scene of the stabbing while officers attempted to revive Haynes. Police said Ramsey “raised his hand as if he was going to say something, but walked away shaking his head” and returned to his apartment, where he was later arrested.

Police said Ramsey refused to talk to them and also refused to provide a DNA sample despite a court order. In Ramsey’s apartment, they found the clothes he was wearing at the time of the stabbing and the knife sheath.

What’s next?

Robert Ramsey is charged with second-degree murder for the stabbing. He will make his first court appearance on the charges Tuesday morning.

Prosecutors want Ramsey held without bail until they serve a search warrant to provide a DNA sample.
