Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed popular defense minister Yoav Gallant in a surprise statement.

Netanyahu and Gallant have been at odds repeatedly throughout the war in Gaza. However, Netanyahu refrained from expelling his rival.

A previous attempt to fire Gallant in March 2023 led to widespread street protests against Netanyahu.

The Prime Minister announced his decision late Tuesday.
