The identified teenager was found dead after the boat carrying 6 people capsized off the Sonoma coast, authorities said.

The teen was a 17-year-old from Corning in Tehama County, northwest of Chico.

Authorities have identified a teenage boy who was found dead Sunday afternoon after a pleasure boat carrying him and five other people crashed. Capsized off the coast of Sonoma County.

A search party found 17-year-old Johnny Phommathep II of Corning dead in the water around noon Sunday, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.

Phommathep was one of six people aboard the 21-foot Bayliner pleasure boat, which departed from the boat launch at Westside Regional Park’s Bodega Bay around 3 p.m. Saturday.

Saturday was the first day of the holiday recreational Dungeness crab season and the group of five family members and a family friend were going out crabbing.

Just after 22:00 on Saturday, a person affiliated with the group called the authorities and reported that the boat, which was supposed to return around 19:00 in the evening, was missing. Deputies on the beach pinged one of the boaters’ cell phone, which arrived about 7 miles off Carmet Beach.

Authorities from multiple agencies, including the Sheriff’s Office, Coast Guard and California Air National Guard, searched the area Saturday night and all day Sunday. Authorities found Phommathep’s body and found an 11-year-old boy alive.

The 11-year-old boy was somehow heading down Highway 1 on Sunday morning when a motorist found him. He was taken to a local hospital.

It is not yet clear whether the two boys are related, and four other boaters remain missing.

One person was found unresponsive and pronounced dead after firefighters attempted life-saving measures. The second man has not yet been found.
