Pune: Shoaib alias Akhtar Babu Shaikh, the main accused in the gang-rape of an events management student (21) at Bopdev ghat on October 3, misled the police by giving fake names of himself and the student, the state prosecution told the city court on Tuesday. The third suspect from Baramati is still wanted in the case.
Deputy public prosecutor Aamrapali Kasture said the police had to take Shaikh (27) to his hometown of Latur and his father-in-law’s house in Nagpur and verify his Aadhaar card and birth certificate documents to determine his real name. This, he stated, happened after police found inconsistencies in Shaikh’s father’s name.
The prosecutor said investigations revealed that Shaikh gave the false name of the wanted suspect and police identified his real identity. The police stated that after interrogating Shaikh and the other arrested accused, Chandrakumar Raviprasad Kanaujia (20), they wanted to know the whereabouts of the wanted suspect and arrest him.
Police needed to confront the two accused in custody to uncover full details of the crime, including where they were before and after the crime, the places they visited, the identities of witnesses and whether anyone else helped them escape. sent.
