More healthcare professionals equipped to provide specialized care

–Dr. Anthony encourages graduates to consider placements in regional hospitals

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) Institute for Health Sciences Education celebrated the accomplishments of its graduating class at its 17th Annual Awards Banquet, held Nov. 3 at the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown.

At the event sponsored by GPHC and attended by healthcare professionals and distinguished guests, the achievements of 49 students who completed advanced training in various medical specialties were rewarded.

According to the statement made by the Ministry of Health (MOH), this year’s graduates are in regional anesthesia, psychiatry, ear, nose and throat, diagnostic radiology, internal medicine, family medicine, emergency nursing, emergency medicine, pediatrics, anesthesia and intensive care, echocardiography and orthopedics. The Ministry of Health stated that these skilled professionals represent a significant advancement for Guyana’s healthcare sector, increasing the country’s capacity for specialized patient care, diagnostics and emergency response.

Making the speech, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony praised the graduates for their perseverance in the face of challenging circumstances and their unwavering commitment to excellence. He highlighted the collaborative efforts behind the development of Guyana’s healthcare system, acknowledging the critical role that mentors, educators and international partners play in shaping the country’s medical education framework.

Dr. Anthony encouraged graduates to consider placements at regional hospitals and emphasized the vital contributions they can make to communities beyond Georgetown. “You are stepping into a noble profession at a very important time for our country. Working in our regional hospitals, you have the opportunity to bring high-quality care directly to communities across Guyana. “Your skills are essential to strengthening access to care and improving patient outcomes beyond Georgetown,” he insisted.

Dr. In his speech, Anthony also touched upon the government’s recent investments in healthcare infrastructure. It announced plans to launch six new hospitals in regions 2, 3, 4 and 6 by March 2025, each designed to improve patient comfort and service delivery. “These new hospitals are much more than buildings; they represent our commitment to better healthcare for all Guyanese. The Minister noted that each facility will be equipped with advanced diagnostic capabilities, modernized inpatient treatment areas and expanded emergency services.

Anthony concluded by expressing his vision to position Guyana as a regional leader in healthcare through the continued development of local expertise and medical education pathways. He congratulated the graduates and their families and underlined the transformative role they are poised to play in the country’s healthcare field.

The GPHC Awards Banquet was a celebration of dedication, resilience and progress, marking another milestone for Guyana’s healthcare sector and reinforcing the government’s commitment to building a stronger, more accessible healthcare system for all citizens.
