Know 5 Reasons Why Goa Tourism Has Seen a Huge Decline in the Number of Foreign Tourists

Goa is popularly called the ‘beach paradise’ of India due to its clean shores and diverse tourist destinations. Where Goa used to thrive between October and December every year, the state is now witnessing a sharp decline in tourism, with industry insiders and tourists pointing out significant declines in the number of foreign visitors.

This decline in tourist numbers has left people wondering, with speculation that Goa is losing its grandeur and charm as a result of affordable and more developed cities in Southeast Asia.

Goa tourism affected

Entrepreneur Ramanuj Mukherjee recently took to social media to highlight the alarming decline in foreign visitors. A comparison between 2019 and 2023 figures. “Foreign tourists have already left the state. Russians and British who visit here every year preferred Sri Lanka,” he said.

“Indian tourists still visit, but they will soon leave as rumors spread that tourists are being exploited when there are many similar cheaper places abroad,” he added.

Here are other reasons why tourism is declining in Goa

According to O Heraldo, one of the possible reasons for the decline in Goa tourism is the ongoing conflicts between Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine, which has led to a decrease in charter flights, especially from Russia and Israel, two important sources of foreign tourists. This has affected Goa as most of its international visitors usually come from these countries.

Tourists are increasingly choosing international destinations such as Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Bali, which offer lower costs, attractive visa options and better tourism infrastructure. Rival destinations have actively developed resorts that can offer more affordable holiday packages than Goa.

Goa’s high-priced accommodation, food and transportation costs may have turned away some visitors. Many are finding more budget-friendly options elsewhere, where they can enjoy similar beaches and attractions at lower prices. An X user emphasized that people in Goa should stop charging extra money from foreigners and start offering reasonable prices and a better experience to boost tourism. “A much-needed wake-up call for the Indian hospitality industry. You can’t keep charging exorbitant prices for average experiences and expect tourists to flock in,” said an X user.

It is also emphasized that Goa’s infrastructure is weak. There is no better or safer form of transportation available. Issues such as limited intrastate transportation, inconsistent beach maintenance, and inadequate facilities are also contributing factors. Guests looking for a hassle-free travel experience are increasingly choosing destinations that better meet these standards. “This is just the beginning. As more southeastern countries relax visa norms, with better infrastructure and food options at 50% of Goa cost, all of India’s tourist destinations (except mandir tourism) will get a reality check.” the user commented.
