A Dhaka court today (November 6) sent former Housing and Works Minister RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury to jail in a case filed over the murder of BNP activist Mokbul.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zaiadur Rahman upheld the verdict after the police produced him in court after expiry of five-day remand in the case and requested that he be kept behind bars till the investigation is completed.

Early on November 1, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehera jailed Chowdhury for five days in the case.

A police detective branch (DB) team arrested Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury from Mirpur area of ​​the city earlier that day (November 1).

According to the case documents, BNP leaders and activists started meeting in the capital on December 10, 2022, as part of the party programme. On the occasion of the programme, police and AL officials created chaos in front of the BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan on December 7. They entered the BNP office, attacked them with batons and opened fire on the BNP men, seriously injuring Mokbul.

Mokbul later died from his injuries in hospital. The case was filed on September 30, 2024, against 256 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
