Police release video of car theft and attempted theft

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WFSB) – Fairfield police are warning residents to keep their cars locked after a recent spate of vehicle thefts and thefts.

Police released video of an incident in September where two teenagers stole a keychain left inside a car and tried to break into the house the next day using the stolen keys.

On Sept. 1, Fairfield police responded to Lovers Lane after observing two teenagers on motorcycles gaining access to unlocked cars parked in their driveway.

The suspects were seen on video breaking into the Range Rover and stealing the key fob. They fled the scene before the police arrived.

The next day, the two teens returned and attempted to break into an occupied home on Highlawn Road using the stolen keys.

“Surveillance footage from the residence’s Ring doorbell camera captured a juvenile suspect attempting to open the front door using keys stolen during the previous day’s vehicle burglaries,” police said. “Although the suspects were unable to enter the primary residence, they entered an adjacent shed on the property.”

Police noted that one of the youths was involved in a shooting in another area just a few days later.

Two weeks later that teenager was arrested with a loaded firearm.

Both suspects were eventually identified and arrested. They were charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, burglary and criminal attempt to commit burglary.

The police department offered citizens a list of recommendations.

  • Always lock vehicle doors, especially at night, and remove keys, valuables and all personal information from vehicles.
  • Secure all entry points into your home, including doors, windows and garages, especially at night or when leaving the property unattended.
  • Consider installing doorbell cameras or other home video surveillance systems that have proven invaluable in deterring criminal activity and assisting in investigations.
