Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced the launch of health insurance coverage for all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, irrespective of their income, under the flagship initiative of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).All senior citizens aged 70 and over will benefit from health insurance, regardless of their financial situation. The only eligibility criterion is that a person must be 70 years of age or above, determined by the age recorded in his Aadhaar card, regardless of his economic status.

Note that Aadhaar-based e-KYC is mandatory for registration and issuance of Ayushman cards for eligible senior citizens.

All eligible senior citizens aged 70 years and above will be issued a separate Ayushman card.

What is Ayushman Bharat’s insurance benefit?

Coverage of Rs 5 lakh is provided on family basis. Note that the annual limit of Rs 5 lakh is shared among them as part of the same family. Additional coverage of Rs 5 lakh is only for family members aged 70 years and above. The rest of the family will continue to get the existing insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB) post on social media, “Every senior citizen over the age of 70 will now receive free treatment in hospitals. These senior citizens will be issued Ayushman Vaya Vandana Card. This plan is expected to be a turning point. “Having an Ayushman Vaya Vandana Card for an elderly person in the household will both reduce the family’s expenses and reduce their worries.”

How to apply for Ayushman Vay Vandana card to get insurance benefits?

Step 1: Download Ayushman App
Step 2: Click Sign in as beneficiary
Step 3: Enter captcha, enter mobile number, select authentication mode and enter captcha again’ and click Login.
Step 3: Enter beneficiary details, Aadhaar details
Step 4: If the beneficiary is not found, follow the eKYC process. Confirm for OTP.
Step 5: Provide declaration, take photographs, and complete any additional applications as applicable
Step 6: Enter the beneficiary’s mobile number and OTP
Step 7: Enter the beneficiary’s details like category, PIN code.
Step 8: Add family members details and continue sending
Step 9: E-KYC completed, you can download Ayushman Vay Vandana Card sometime after verification.

Beneficiaries can begin accessing treatment from the first day they sign up. Since there is no waiting period for any disease or treatment, coverage starts immediately. There is no government-set income limit for eligibility under this program. Any Indian citizen aged 70 years and above, regardless of income level, can benefit from this benefit.

I am a retired civil servant over 70 years of age and I have a CGHS card. Can I also register to this system?
Yes, you are eligible. However, as per government rules, citizens availing any other government health plan are required to either opt for existing plan benefits or benefits under AB PM-JAY. This means if you have CGHS, you have to choose between CGHS and Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY; because both programs cannot be used at the same time.

My father is over 70 years old and I have health insurance for him through a private company. Will my father still be a beneficiary under PM-JAY?
