Three people arrested in Delhi for gang-raping mentally ill woman from Odisha

Delhi Police arrested three men for allegedly gang-raping a mentally ill Odisha woman in Sarai Kale Khan, officials said on Thursday.

The victim is undergoing treatment at AIIMS in Delhi following the alleged gang rape on October 10. They said he went to Delhi on May 9 without informing his family, who filed a missing report in Puri.

According to the police, on October 11, they received information about a woman lying in a pool of blood near Sarai Kale Khan area.

“Police personnel immediately reached the spot and the victim was found in a distressed condition and was taken to AIIMS Trauma Center for medical examination and care. On arrival at the hospital, the victim disclosed to the treating doctor that she had had sexual intercourse. She was assaulted by three persons,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Ravi Kumar Singh.

After his initial statement, Singh said the victim was unable to cooperate further with the investigation or hospital staff due to his illness.

A total of 10 police teams have been formed and more than 700 CCTV cameras have been checked to nab the accused, identified as Prabhu Mahto, Parmod alias Babu and Mohammad Shamsul, the police officer said.

During interrogation, Parmod noticed a woman sitting near Old Delhi railway station on October 10, the DCP said. He conspired with Shamsul, a physically disabled beggar, to sexually assault the girl, assuming she was mentally unstable and an easy target. Singh said they forcibly dragged him to a deserted area to commit the crime.

She said the incident was also witnessed by the car driver Prabhu Mahto, who allegedly raped her. DCP said Mahto then threw the victim near Saray Kale Han and ran away.

Stating that the victim belonged to Odisha and was highly educated, the DCP said that he went to Delhi on May 9 without informing his family.

He said a missing person report was registered by his family on June 9 at Kumbharpada police station in Puri.
