Taliban hopes to open a ‘new page’ with Trump administration

The Taliban interim government in Afghanistan has reacted to Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election, saying it hopes it will open a new page in relations with the US.
Abdul Qahar Balkhi, spokesman for the interim government’s foreign ministry, released a statement about X following the election results.
He expressed hope that the new administration would adopt a pragmatic approach to promote ties between the two sides.
The spokesman also touched upon the peace agreement signed with the USA in Doha in 2020 under the Trump presidency.
He said the agreement led to the end of Afghanistan’s two-decade occupation.
He added that the Taliban expects Trump to play a constructive role in ending the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.
Western countries impose strict sanctions on Afghanistan due to the Taliban severely restricting women’s rights. Meanwhile, China and Russia have moved to deepen their ties with the group.
Some observers say the Trump administration may try to approach the Taliban against the two countries.
