Police are carrying out Operation Shoulder Tap targeting adults buying alcohol for people under 21

The Redding Police Department (RPD) conducted a Shoulder Shot operation in Redding on Monday, Nov. 4, to apprehend adults purchasing alcohol for children under the legal purchasing age of 21.

It was alleged that two people bought alcohol for an underage child during the operation.

RPD said during the operation, a minor under the direct supervision of a peace officer stood outside a liquor store or convenience store and asked customers to buy alcohol for them after somehow indicating that they were under the legal age to purchase alcohol. If the adult agrees to purchase, an agent will arrest and file a criminal complaint against the person for purchasing alcohol for a minor.

The penalty for providing alcohol to a minor is a fine of at least $1,000 and 24 hours of community service.

RPD also said funding for this program comes from a grant from the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) through the department’s Grant Assistance Program.
