Trump Gathers 35,000 More Votes in 2 Key Counties

To win Michigan, Trump needed to outperform two swing counties, Kent and Oakland. Harris ultimately triumphed in Michigan’s liberal counties, but Trump received 30,000 more votes in Oakland County than in 2020 and 5,000 more votes in Kent County.

Oakland and Kent counties have undergone major demographic changes over the past two decades. Both were Republican strongholds, but growth in the Detroit suburbs and the city of Grand Rapids flipped the counties from red to blue in 2020.

Nearly a third of Trump’s 95,000-vote margin in Michigan came from him doing better in Kent and Oakland than he did in 2016, when he barely won the state 47.6% to 47.4% over Hillary Clinton .

“This is the second time a Republican has carried Michigan since 1988,” Mitchell said, referring to Trump’s 2016 victory. “The first time it was by about 10,000 votes and this time it’s by almost 100,000 votes. So this is a significant victory.”

Mitchell, who is no relation to this reporter, predicted that Trump would win Michigan if he was successful in Kent and Oakland.

“If they lean too heavily toward Harris, that’s probably a good sign for Harris,” Mitchell told The Daily Signal before the election. “On the other hand, if for some reason it’s within two or three points for Harris in Kent County and maybe six or eight points in Oakland County, then Harris is probably going to lose.”

Huizenga said Trump was able to achieve a victory of this scale through hard work and staying true to his message.

“I think this is a testament to staying on message and that Kamala Harris is clearly an unqualified candidate,” the West Michigan congresswoman said.

Although some Republicans were hesitant to support Trump in 2020, Huizenga said he noticed that people were more willing to openly support the former president this year.

“The Trump-related lawsuits, all the harassment, the lawsuits, have brought some of the stray Republican votes back into the fold,” he said.

Harris Failed to Perform Great Against Racial Minorities

Trump takes two percentage points from black Michiganders to win 9% share of black votes compared to 7% in 2020.

“He clearly did something that no Republican candidate had ever done, and that was to motivate African Americans to vote for a Republican candidate,” Mitchell said.

Huizenga said minorities in Michigan have seen their “purchasing power diminish” during the Biden-Harris administration.

“They see the cost of grocery shopping, the cost of running a small business, the cost of pulling up to the gas pump,” the Michigan Republican said. “They felt the impact, and I think that’s why the message that’s going out there, even about the border, is tied to a law and order narrative that is clearly out of control under the Biden-Harris administration.”

Huizenga continued: “I think Trump stayed true to the economic message as well as the safety and security message. And here in Michigan, the only thing Democrats wanted to talk about was abortion.”

Huizenga said Democrats are so focused on abortion, which is legal in Michigan until birth, that they haven’t adequately addressed the economy, foreign policy, energy policy and other issues that really impact Michiganders.

“Donald Trump has become sort of a counterculture,” he said, “and I think that has a certain appeal.”

Mitchell said Democrats lost some of their minority votes due to illegal immigration.

“Illegal immigrants were taking jobs that many African Americans would normally get, and I think they were fed up with the Biden-Harris administration allowing these incredible numbers of immigrants into the country. And that door is going to be closed by the Trump administration,” the pollster said.

Harris Did Not Call for Faith in Michiganders

This time, Trump received 20 percentage points among Michigan Catholics, according to a Fox News exit poll.

Huizenga said he sees the party reuniting with Irish Catholics in his own family in Michigan. He attributes this to Democrats’ stances on social issues, abortion and the economy.

“They are small business owners, union members, firefighters and police officers,” Huizenga said of the Catholic vote. “I’m not surprised that people of faith feel like Democrats abandoned them a long time ago, and in fact it’s gotten so bad they feel rejected.”

In mid-October, Harris did not go to the Al Smith Dinner, an annual fundraiser for Catholic charities traditionally attended by presidential candidates. Mitchell said many older Catholics saw this as a slap in the face.

“Basically, with his actions, he gave the Catholic vote a direct path to Donald Trump,” the pollster said.

The former president also had a net gain of 16,000 votes in Dearborn, which has the largest concentration of Muslim Americans in the country.

Mitchell argued that the Biden-Harris administration tried to play both sides in the Israel-Hamas war and lost both Jewish and Muslim support.

Mitchell said of Muslims: “I think they realized that (Trump) was going to quickly resolve the war and (Israel) was going to stop killing Arabs, and that’s what they wanted, and they didn’t get that.”
