State pensioners warned as HMRC tax law suddenly changes | Personal Finance | Finance

HMRC has issued a statement about tax codes after being contacted by someone concerned that tax codes had suddenly changed.

A customer contacted the government agency through X and asked: “My husband had the right to file a claim. state pension in September this year but did not request it. Can you tell me why the tax code changed from 1383M to 931M?”

The tax authority first asked the person to explain which tax code was on the payslip. They said that the payroll issued on October 31 was 1383 million, and the payroll for November 7 was 931 million.

HMRC He then asked the man if a tax code notice had been sent about the change, but the person said he had not been sent.

Authorities then advised the person to call the hotline about the issue unless he or she was in a position to speak on his or her own behalf.

The woman said she had records of the overpayment a few years ago but wasn’t sure if it would still be valid.

HMRC Directed the taxpayer to general income tax inquiries page On the government website.

If your tax code has the letter M at the end, this means you’ll get 10 per cent of the personal allowance from your partner, adding an extra £1,260 to your tax-free allowance.

This complies with marriage benefit rules, which allow you to transfer some of your personal allowance to your spouse or civil partner.

To be eligible for marriage benefit you must earn below the standard personal allowance of £12,570 per year.

Couples should note that you need to be married or in a civil partnership to do this, as if you were just living together, this does not count.
