  • Benn’s doping ban lifted after two failed drug tests in 2022
  • The 28-year-old is now keen to return to the ring for a blockbuster contest

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) has issued a brief statement on Conor Benn’s future after the controversial fighter’s doping suspension was lifted.

Benn has been confused since Mail Sport revealed in October 2022 that the banned substance clomifene had been detected twice in samples.

But on Wednesday, the 28-year-old footballer’s sentence was suspended as his doping suspension was overturned in a shockwave that followed two years after two positive drug tests.

The National Anti-Doping Panel, which cleared Benn of the charges, ruled in the boxer’s favour, saying they were ‘not satisfied’ with UK Anti-Doping’s (UKAD) proof that Benn had breached the rules.

Now the BBBofC has spoken out for the first time since the decision but remained coy about Benn’s return to the ring as UKAD has 21 days to consider the appeal.

Despite Benn’s confidence that he could return to the ring soon – targeting a dream fight against Chris Eubank Jr that was previously canceled after failed drug tests – the BBBofC announced they were still ‘considering’ all options.

The statement began: ‘The British Boxing Board of Control is aware that Conor Benn issued a press release on 6 November 2024 in relation to proceedings between himself and UK Anti-Doping.

‘BBBofC refers to the statement Ukad issued in response. We are evaluating our position. ‘All questions regarding this matter should be directed to UK Anti-Doping.’

The organisation’s announcement comes after UKAD issued its own statement earlier in the week: ‘UKAD can confirm that the independent National Anti-Doping Panel received its decision this afternoon.

The panel concluded that UKAD’s evidence that Mr Benn had committed an Anti-Doping Code Breaches due to his use of clomiphene was “not comfortably satisfactory”.

‘The previously imposed temporary suspension was lifted and, as a result, the charge against him was also dismissed.

‘The UKAD will now carefully review the panel’s decision in accordance with its rights of appeal under the UK Anti-Doping Code.’

Benn is clearly feeling positive that the saga that destroyed his career is now over, previously stating on social media: ‘After an incredibly difficult two years, I am grateful that the National Anti-Doping Panel has finally cleared me of any wrongdoing.

‘The past 24 months have been arguably the toughest challenge of my life. It’s been a roller coaster of a time where the WBC decided I was innocent anyway and the NADP decided there wasn’t a case to answer in the first place and I was free to fight.

‘As someone who is so passionate about boxing and an advocate for the clean sport, I hope I am now exonerated and it is understandable why I have maintained my innocence so strongly throughout this time.’

‘As a man of God, we hold no ill will towards UKAD or the British Boxing Board of Control, we have a shared passion for a clean sport and I look forward to reconciling with the board and moving forward together.’
