REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. – Following Hurricane Helene, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineering and Support Center Huntsville, initiated emergency relief efforts for communities affected by the storm. The Huntsville Center mobilized resources and staff, focusing on restoring essential services and preventing further damage.

More than 260 USACE personnel have been deployed to coordinate with partners in affected areas. Huntsville Center has deployed nine employees to provide technical support and resources throughout North Carolina. They are coordinating with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, USACE South Atlantic Division, USACE Wilmington District, and local emergency responders.

“Our support is all about getting local communities back on their feet. “This is about rebuilding facilities to support day-to-day functions,” said emergency management expert Charles Carson.

Relief efforts aim to secure critical infrastructure, provide temporary building solutions, and assist with waste and water reduction efforts. The Association recognizes the importance of restoring electricity, water supplies and road access and is working to restore affected areas.

The center features professionals who evaluate and develop innovative solutions for water and waste systems in Western North Carolina. Other relief initiatives include assessing and planning temporary facilities for local government agencies and other critical facilities.

Huntsville Center’s Critical Public Facilities Planning Response Team is currently evaluating 15 individual facilities. Facilities evaluated include county offices, city hall, fire departments, social services building, and public works and recreation buildings.

“These temporary structures will provide facilities to meet the immediate and critical needs of local governments until permanent structures can be built,” Carson said.

USACE’s number one priority throughout the response effort is the life, health, and safety of everyone impacted by Hurricane Helene.
