Buffalo mayor’s brother dies in hunting accident

Buffalo Deputy Mayor Chris Scanlon’s brother was killed in a hunting accident.

WIVB New York State Police responded to a welfare check call Wednesday after a hunter did not return to his vehicle in the Cattaraugus County town of East Otto. During the investigation, it was determined that 54-year-old Mark P. Scanlon of Buffalo died after falling from a portable tree.

Police found no traces of murder in question. The body was taken to Olean State Hospital for an autopsy.

According to Buffalo TV station, Scanlon was a Sergeant with the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff John Garcia said he works for the Jail Management Division.

“Sergeant Scanlon was a public servant of whom the people of Erie County could be proud,” Garcia said. “My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues on this tragic day. We have made grief counselors available to Erie County Sheriff’s Office staff during this difficult time.”

Sergeant. Scanlon died ‘doing one of the things he enjoyed most’ in question of “tragic loss.”

“Mark was a member of the Erie County Sheriff’s Department and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend who was loved by all who knew him,” she added. “On behalf of my sister-in-law Amanda and my entire family, I ask that our privacy be respected during this very difficult time.”
