Disability penalty given to driver who collided with a single vehicle

A single-vehicle crash on Old Garden River Road on Thursday resulted in improper charges for a 24-year-old driver.

Around 7 p.m., Sault Ste. Marie Police Department responded to the crash in the 1200 block of Old Garden River Road.

When police teams arrived at the scene, they found a vehicle in the ditch and started talking to the person they learned was the driver.

Police said officers developed reason to believe the driver was impaired. The defendant provided multiple breath samples, all of which were recorded above the legal limit.

As a result, Amanda Chiarello was charged with:

  • operating while impaired – drugs and/or alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80+)

The suspect was released on notice and is scheduled to appear in court on December 9.

None of the allegations have been tested in court, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
