License plate reader helped recover 57 grams of crack cocaine in Binghamton

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force used a license plate reader to retrieve crack cocaine from a vehicle in Binghamton on Nov. 4.

The Task Force said the license plate reader led to the arrest of 28-year-old Keanu Q. Downey. Downey faces three drug-related charges.

The Task Force said it was alerted by the license plate reader that the vehicle was being driven without the owner’s permission.

Investigators located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on the on-ramp in the area of ​​Brandywine Highway and Route 17/81.

Police found 57 grams of crack cocaine and approximately $3,350 in suspected drug proceeds. A digital scale was also seized.

Downey was taken to the Binghamton Police Department for processing.
