According to the arrest warrant, the victim was protesting and crossed the street to approach John-Paul. The victim said to John-Paul, “Here’s Kitty Kitty,” then John-Paul approached the victim’s face and turned on his phone as if he were recording her, according to the arrest warrant.

The warrant added that John-Paul “lightly tapped the brim of (the victim’s) baseball cap” and then turned and walked away. A witness told police he “observed the defendant hitting (the victim’s) hat twice.”

Sandra Caron is the protester who got into an argument with John-Paul. He said he had never been this angry and afraid.

“I told him yes, I said ‘here he is, kitty,’ and he came back and said you called me, so I called,” Caron said.

Police said when John-Paul touched the brim of Caron’s baseball cap, he turned and walked away.

The assault does not appear to be visible in the video of the incident, but immediately after the possible assault, the victim can be heard on the video yelling, “Don’t touch me,” per the arrest warrant.

He appeared before a judge Thursday morning and was given a $776 cash bail bond. John-Paul declined to speak to ABC15 as he and his attorney left the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

His attorney, Russell Long, said he blames the city of Myrtle Beach for failing to protect John-Paul from protesters.

“It was literally impossible for John Paul and others around him to live in peace, and I honestly have to blame the City of Myrtle Beach,” Long said.

ABC15 reached out to the City of Myrtle Beach Police Department for a response to Long’s comments but did not hear back at the time of publication.
