Cases filed due to ‘expression crime’ will be rejected

Legal Advisor Dr. In his statement yesterday, Asif Nazrul said that cases filed for “expression crimes” will be dismissed simultaneously with the repeal of the Cyber ​​Security Act.

“We are repealing the Cyber ​​Security Act (CSA) and we made the announcement a long time ago. There are some cases filed for ‘expression crimes’… all of these cases will be automatically dismissed,” he said, according to BSS.

“Cases brought against free-thinkers, people with differing views, and those accused of their speech and dissenting views will be dismissed with the repeal of the CSA,” he added.

However, legal counsel stated that trials in cases involving computer crimes such as hacking, fraud and blackmail will continue.

He was addressing the DRU-Desh TV Best Journalism Award-2024 ceremony as the chief guest of Dhaka Club.

Criticizing some of the journalist leaders, the advisor said that they were working only to increase their own wealth, not to improve the conditions of ordinary journalists.

“By keeping ordinary journalists hostage, they (the so-called leaders) amassed huge amounts of money, owned houses and cars and gained influence,” Asif said. he said.

Speaking to the program as a special guest, Environmental Consultant Syeda Rizwana Hasan emphasized that fearless and impartial journalism is essential for the protection of democracy and the environment.

The programme, chaired by DRU President Syed Shukur Ali Shuvo, was conducted by DRU General Secretary Mohi Uddin.

Meanwhile, The Daily Star’s Senior Staff Reporter Ahsan Habib and 10 other journalists bagged the Best Reporting Award-2023 in four categories, presented by DRU and Desh TV.

Habib won the award in the print media category for his report titled “Aamar Bond, Not IFIC’s”.

Daily Prothom Alo’s staff reporter Mahmudul Hasan Nayon also won the best reporting award in the same category for his report titled “Benazir got PhD from DU without registration requirement”.

Financial Express reporters Jasim Uddin Haroon and Farhan Ferdous jointly won the award in the same category for their story titled “Women investors outperform men, challenge stereotypes”.
