SIT Set Up to Investigate Gang Rape of Woman

New Delhi: A six-member special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the gang rape of a woman researcher from Odisha on October 11. The team, led by a female deputy police commissioner, will aim to file criminal charges against three people. Sources said the men were arrested for the crime within a month.
The chargesheet will focus on scientific evidence and DNA tests to provide a strong case against the accused trio. Facing charges of gang rape, they could potentially face 20 years to life imprisonment for their actions under Article 70 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as fines to cover the medical expenses and rehabilitation of their targets.
The SIT has also added the charge of kidnapping to the initial FIR and is also considering charges of attempt to murder. These will allow the prosecutor to seek the maximum sentence for the defendant in this case, namely life imprisonment. Police are exploring options for appointing a special prosecutor to handle the case.
To establish the sequence of events leading up to the incident, police analyzed the footage recorded on CCTV cameras and found that the woman changed 8-10 cars between Old Delhi Railway Station and ITO on October 10. The woman was caught on the railway’s CCTV camera. Station around 10:00 that day. From there, he was seen walking towards Cashmere Gate ISBT. He wanted to take a ride from there, but he had no money. “When he confessed that he had no money, every car driver asked him to get out of the car,” said a police officer.
He finally reached the ITO in the evening and there, sitting alone near the Delhi Metro station, he was spotted by two of the accused, Pramod and Mohammad Shamsul. The investigation revealed that the woman was met by the duo at the İTO intersection. She was dragged into nearby bushes and raped. The third suspect, a passing car driver, stopped the woman, forced her into his car and raped her.
He then took it to Rajghat via the service road and dumped it somewhere on the road near Sarai Kale Khan. A dazed and confused woman was walking on the road late at night when she was spotted by an Indian Air Force officer, who alerted the police control room.
Police took the woman to AIIMS Trauma Center for treatment. Police caught three people after a search that lasted 21 days. Crucial evidence was collected and solidified the case against the trio. The autorickshaw with plate number DL1RAA***7 involved in the crime was seized.
Critical physical evidence was seized, including the victim’s bloody shalwar and pants. The clothes worn by the men during the incident were also seized, especially the clothes of the auto driver Prabhu Mahto, Pramod’s clothes, hat, belt and shoes and Shamsul’s clothes.
After the detention procedures were completed, the suspects were referred to the courthouse and sent to prison on Saturday. In the prison, the trio, who face threats of attack from other inmates, are kept under strict surveillance in their cells.
