Kamala Harris lost. Donald Trump won. How come?

Ten reasons.

1. Kamala Harris. He lost because of her. Not because of anything he said or did; He was a great candidate. He lost because of something he couldn’t control. She is a woman. So far, it’s clear that America won’t be voting for a woman to be president anytime soon. Democrats tried twice. That glass ceiling will remain intact for years to come, and that’s very sad.

2. Democrats’ Vice Presidential pick. Tim Walz is a good man. He has a rustic, awful personality that’s hard not to like. But — as this writer has said repeatedly — the fight was always going to reach the so-called blue wall (Michigan, Wisconsin, and especially Pennsylvania). So why didn’t Democrats elect Pennsylvania’s hugely popular Democratic Governor, Josh Shapiro? Because apparently he’s a proud Jew. Harris’ team was nervous about the anti-Semitic vote in Michigan and chose wrong. Shame on them.

3. Joe Biden. Full disclosure: I worked hard for Joe Biden when he won. I believed him because of his honesty and experience. But the presidency aged him badly. His one debate with Trump demonstrated this to millions of Americans. After that train wreck, Biden delayed and denied the inevitable. Loyalists like me said he had to go. When he finally did, he gave Harris just 100 days to prove herself as a viable candidate. It wasn’t enough time. Biden’s arrogance defeated Harris.

4. Israel. As Thursday’s horrific events in Amsterdam reminded the world, Israel is no longer just a country. Israel is now a place where one’s morality is tested. It is a mirror held up to reveal who is on the side of civilization and decency and who is on the side of barbarism and cruelty. Since October 7, 2023, the Jews, not the Israeli government, have once again become victims of history. Did the Democratic Party fail this morality test? That’s what happened.

5. Inward. The United States turned inward. Its people no longer want to be global police officers. They no longer want trade liberalization. They no longer care about NATO, Ukraine or Taiwan. Donald Trump is a complete idiot, but he’s smart enough to know that America is turning inward. The Democratic Party, always internationalist, did not do this. They paid the price.

6. Economy. If Trump continues with his reckless tariff plan, he will reignite inflation and possibly even shake the global economy. From where? Because what does a supplier of a product like grain, softwood, beef, auto parts do if they are subject to taxes? They pass the cost on to the consumer and inflation returns with a vengeance. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party hasn’t paid enough attention to its own polls that show most Americans (like most Canadians) are unhappy with the cost of living. Fifth Avenue billionaire Donald Trump understands this. Why didn’t the Democrats do it?

7. Border. Canada and the United States are countries created by immigrants and refugees. Everyone knows this. But when Hispanics, the largest immigrant demographic in the United States, vote for the man who likens them to rapists and murderers and wants to deport them, you have a big problem, Democrats. Do you bring people when you don’t have a place to stay? Unmerciful. Bringing in people who carry with them hatreds acquired elsewhere? Madness. Democrats realized they had a border problem, but it was too late. Trump got there first.

8. Conservatives. Small c, not capital C. Conservative parties are on the march all over the world. They have a smaller voter base in Western democracies. So why do they win elections? Because they know that important political choices are decided in the guts of voters, not in their heads. And because progressives chose pronouns over principles.

9. Media. I’m a (mostly) progressive working for a conservative media outlet. Conservatives around me rarely agree with me, but they welcome my voice. Why weren’t Harris and the Democrats like them? Why did he hide from the media for weeks when he should have identified himself? Why didn’t it go to Joe Rogan? The media paradigm has changed, friends. But Democrats are still trying to satisfy the editorial board. New York Times. There were those people! They needed new people!

10. Whites. I am a white, heterosexual male. I have privilege and I know it. But it would be nice in 2024 if Democrats and even Canadian Liberals occasionally saw me as a citizen and not always as the devil incarnate. Would it kill them to do this? Apparently. So the white men killed them at the first opportunity.

Anyway. There are 10 reasons. What are the biggest things he lost? I have 134,000. 18,000 votes in Wisconsin. 38,000 in Michigan. 78,000 in Pennsylvania.

These are the 134,000 main reasons Kamala Harris lost. If those votes had flipped the other way, he would have been the president-elect. Period. Just under 2 percent of the vote in three states.

That’s why he lost and she won.
