Canadian police have made a new arrest in connection with a pro-Khalistan attack on a Hindu temple in the Greater Toronto Area on Saturday. Last week, violence broke out at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton following a visit by Indian officials. Pro-Khalistani protesters created mayhem in the area, which eventually spread to two other locations in Mississauga and continued on Monday.

In a press release on Saturday, Peel Regional Police said a 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with the case. Authorities stated that the person was carrying an assault weapon and would appear in court soon. Global News reported.

Authorities had previously made four other arrests in the case. Among those arrested in the case was a 57-year-old man accused of inciting public hatred. Not only that, but a Peel police officer has also been suspended.

Police condemn violence

In a statement on Saturday, police stated that many protests occurred during the demonstrations and many were recorded on video; One of them was seen inciting violence by using a loudspeaker to call on people to attack the temple. Videos circulating on social media show fist fights in the temple area and people hitting each other with sticks.

“Additional crimes continue to be investigated and we are confident there will be additional arrests,” Peel regional police chief Nishan Duralappah said in a statement: Global News reported. “Violence and hatred were seen in every incident. “It is unacceptable and has no place in our societies,” he added. Authorities asked local residents to provide any information regarding the incident.

Clashes outside the temple quickly escalated and one person was injured, who was later treated by medics. Recently, Canada has been witnessing a massive rise in the pro-Khalistani movement; many activists frequently vandalize Hindu temples. The issue has also created a major rift between India and Canada’s diplomatic relations.
